Traditional flint wall specialists · Sussex
Flint walls, repaired, restored and built new.
The Sussex Flint Company works in knapped flint and hot lime mortar — repairing and restoring existing flint walls, and building new ones in the traditional way.
Knapped flint
Flint split to expose its dark face and laid as the finished surface of the wall — the traditional walling of Sussex.
Hot lime mortar
The traditional mortar for flint work. We build and repair with hot lime mortar, not cement.
Repair, restoration, new build
From repointing and coping repairs to restoring a tired wall or building a new one from the footing up.

Flint in the landscape
The building stone of the Sussex Downs.
Flint walls bedded in lime are part of this landscape. They can be repaired, rebuilt and extended in the same materials they were built with.
The craft
Knapped flint, laid in hot lime mortar.
Knapping splits each flint to expose its dark, glassy face. Laid to course, with brick or stone dressings at corners and openings, it makes the walls seen throughout Sussex — and it is how we build and repair them.
Lime mortar is softer than the flint it holds and lets a wall breathe. Hot-mixed lime is the traditional mortar for this work, and it is what we use.
